In a statement to his fellow police sergeants, Ed Mullins, the president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, said he was aware of what was occurring in the city, that there is ‘no leadership, no direction, and no plan’ because of higher-level politics that seems incapable of addressing the riots. However, Mullins encouraged his fellow officers to ‘stand shoulder to shoulder and to never give up.’
The Sergeants Benevolent Association is the second-largest police union in New York City.
‘I am being inundated with calls, text messages and emails pleading for help,’ Mullins wrote in his statement. ’Please know that I am reading each and every correspondence I receive. I want each of you to know that I am very much aware of everything that is occurring in our city.’
