On April 10, the Ministry of Defense of Saudi Arabia announced that three of its soldiers were executed after being convicted of committing “high treason”.
In a brief statement, the ministry said that the three soldiers had collaborated with an “enemy” and acted against the interests of the Kingdom.
“The three soldiers were convicted of high treason following the investigation which uncovered their collaboration with the enemy over plots against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s military interests, security and stability, adding that the convicted soldiers had been referred to the specialized court with all judicial guarantees essential for fair trial, the rule of law and the proper administration of justice,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted the statement as saying.
The three soldiers were identified as Mohammed bin Ahmed bin Yahya Akam, Shaher bin Isa bin Qasim Haqqawi, and Hamoud bin Ibrahim bin Ali Hazmi
The Ministry of Defense said it “denounced the heinous crime,” adding that “it is alien to its members and the country’s values.”
Saudi Arabia didn’t provide any further details on the case. The soldiers may have been spying for Iran or even for the Yemeni Houthis (Ansar Allah), the main foes of the Kingdom. Riyadh have been working against Tehran interests in the Middle East for quite a long time. For the last five years, the Saudi militants have been waging a war on Yemen.
The public announcement of the execution is likely meant as a warning to service members in the Saudi military. More information about the rare case may surface soon.
