It is a known fact that every symbol has a unique meaning. In that case what does this unique symbol, Caduceus, which is used, in various forms and modifications, by many medical organizations mean? Is it just a custom or does it have a deeper meaning? The story of this medical symbol started way back in the time of the Sumarin Civilization. mythically known as Babylon, (7,000 – 3,000 BC) traveled through time, has undergone many changes, misconceptions and has finally reached the present state.
Have you ever wondered why a snake, which is a symbol of destruction? The shedding of snake skin being a symbol of renewal and self-healing. The intertwined snakes, recognize today as the double helix of the DNA, the building blocks of life. The snake has been used in countless other representations such as the Ouroboros. Originating in ancient Egyptian iconography, the ouroboros entered Western tradition via Greek magical tradition and was adopted as a symbol in Gnosticism and Hermeticism and most notably in alchemy.
The confusion starts with the use of Caduceus and Staff of Asclepius The Caduceus is a symbol of Hermes or Mercury in Greek and Roman mythology. The caduceus symbol is identified with thieves, merchants, and messengers, and Mercury is said to be a patron of thieves and outlaws, not a desirable protector of physicians. The symbol originated when Mercury once attempted to stop a fight between two snakes by throwing his rod at them, whereupon they twined themselves around the rod, and the symbol was born.[2,3] The Rod of Asclepius belongs to Aesculapius, who was the revered Greek god of healing.
Western medicine a profession today largely dependent on pharmaceuticals. The root word is pharmakeia defined as: “the use of medicine, drugs or spells” it’s usage as: magic, sorcery and enchantment. A polemic that describes a snake that appeared to Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden found at the beginning of the Hebrew Bible in the Book of Genesis that was enticing them to eat of the fruit of knowledge. The serpent tempts Eve into eating the fruit; Adam joins in; God banishes the humans from the garden of paradise.
Interestingly, medicine understood today as something that treats or prevents or alleviates the symptoms of disease has it’s root mad- or med- that occurs in several languages: middle Persian madha (medical science, wisdom); Sanscrit medha (intelligence, wisdom); ancient Greek medos (advice), medomai (to think about). Regarding the etymology of medicine from Latin medica is derived from medeor and is related to the Greek μαθήσιος – the act of learning, acquiring knowledge. “cumcapitimederidebeam, reduviamcuro,” i. e. to neglect matters of importance while attending to trifles, is very much the embodiment of modern medical practice.
On the Tower of Babel Zechariah Sitchin a pioneer deciphering sanscrit found a caduceus that he proposes was the remnants of this biblical tower that reached the heavens. Some believe the tower was a landing pad for UFO’s who originality brought the Sumarians the skills, tools, writing, math and alchemy to build and forge the Babylonian civilization which has long since been buried in sand. Thousands of cylinder seals found in an excavation believed to be the site of this ancient city in the early part of the 1900’s purported to be real evidence of contact between that ancient civilization and extraterrestrial beings. The ancient Sumerian cylinder seals are considered without a doubt some of the most interesting objects ever recovered from Ancient Mesopotamia.
So what’s the correlation to the caduceus Babylon this ancient city with 50 story walls surrounding it and UFO’s?
The modern use of staff of Aesculapius started when The American Medical Association had the staff of Aesculapius as its symbol since 1910. The Royal Army Medical Corp, French Military Service, and other medical organizations had done the same. Even today the World Health Organization, Medical Council of India symbols have the staff of Aesculapius in them. US Army Medical Corps, the Public Health Service, and the US Marine Hospital however use the Caduceus largely as a result of the adoption of the Caduceus as its insignia by the US Army Medical Corps in 1902. Here we see the merging of medicine and the military.
The latest contention making the news cycle is the origins of COVID-19 and the argument of this being an invention in a lab. Specifically the level 4 bioweapons lab in Ft. Detrick Maryland home to the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases where deadly agents like Ebola, smallpox and anthrax are studied, One of the first scientists assigned to Fort Detrick’s secret biological warfare laboratory during WWII was bioweapons expert Frank Olson. In 1953, Olson died after plummeting to the ground from a high-rise hotel room window in Manhattan. Days earlier, he had been secretly drugged by the Central Intelligence Agency, Decades later, it was revealed that Olson didn’t jump from the window — he was deliberately murdered after the CIA became concerned that he might reveal disturbing top-secret operations
In 2009, research at Fort Detrick was suspended because it was discovered it was storing pathogens which were not listed on its inventory. The regulations on keeping close track of hazardous biological material were tightened after the 2001 anthrax attacks, which saw five people die after spores were posted to several media newsrooms and Democratic senators.
The FBI’s chief suspect in the 2001 case, Bruce Ivins, was a senior biological weapons researcher at Fort Detrick. He killed himself in 2008, shortly before the FBI was planning to charge him with the attacks.
Fort Detrick remains a center of controversy and was stripped of its license to study highly restricted pathogens by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2019. The move came after a CDC inspection found its recently installed chemical-based decontamination system may not be adequately treating the facility’s waste water, which could mean that deadly pathogens could potentially escape.
Does any disease that can be treated by a stick come to your mind? Yes, it is none other than Dracunculus medinensis the guinea worm. A parasite that feeds off of the nutrients of its hosts. This is potentially a disease that can be treated with the stick that was also one of the reasons why the medical symbol originated.
I find it very interesting the origins of the caduceus as far as we know, comes from Babylon where the gods confused the languages because they realized there was nothing the people couldn’t accomplish. Thus depriving the people of collaborating and exchanging ideas and information. Just as today the medical industry is once again confusing the language changing definitions and propagandizing medicine bringing into question the nature of who we really are and the power we have to heal ourselves without sorcery, spells and poisons.
