This one is for readers who don’t need to see iron connections made between one note and another…who can take a note and do something with it, turn it to their advantage, make some changes if necessary, twist it with torque and go to town…
It was all a dream, the trips to Nice, the suppers in the dusk, the watering holes, the movie stars, the kindness of the Sultan; but not your faith
Even the saddest day of your life will be a day of great faith
The Teacher lays out the steps of progress along the path to enlightenment like concrete, and at the end the student is facing a brick wall. This was not the Teacher’s intent. But the result was inevitable, because DISCONTINUITY and THE ASYMMETRIC can’t be taught.
When astronaut Edger Mitchell privately told friends he could see, from space, with his naked eye, individual humans walking around on planet Earth, there was no system to account for it.
It’s quite possible that some space aliens have looked at Earth and said it is the home of systems—whereas their approach to reality is quite different.
The universe can be a machine, and it can be a non-machine.
A seven-year-old chess prodigy hasn’t studied and absorbed the moves of the masters.
Robert Bly, the author of Leaping Poetry, the best book ever written about poetry, illustrates poets who don’t move from A to B to C, but from A to R. All at once.
The internal coherence of a system doesn’t prove the system. Virology can be made to appear coherent, despite the fact that it isn’t finding new viruses.
A marriage between two people isn’t a set of variables. Enduring over time, it has untraceable twists and turns. If husband and wife can absorb all the revelations, they triumph. This might take a few thousand years.
Despite the possibility that Nikola Tesla could see, in his mind’s eye, all the parts of a new machine interacting before he ever built a model, the CONCEPT for the machine came from a place or a moment with no name and no material existence.
A conventional artist can take three of his familiar and tired landscapes, cut them to pieces with a knife, scatter the pieces on the floor, paste them together just as they lie there, and he’ll discover indescribable connections that have no precedent or reference. And he’ll feel as if he’s just flown off the top of a mountain and is hovering in mid-air, for the first time in memory.
Here is how, in part, chess genius Bobby Fischer drove himself to distraction. He grew enormously bored with all systems-approaches to chess. He suggested changing the rules for pieces’ movements on the board, in order to open up entirely new frontiers for creative action. No one took him up on his offer. Machine minds preferred their machine.
There are those who believe life is a museum. You walk through the rooms, find one painting, stroll into it and take up permanent residence. But the museum is endless. And if you were a painter, you’d never decide to live inside a canvas forever. You’d keep on painting.
If there were some ultimate state of consciousness, imagination would always be able to play another card and take it farther.
The pavers of concrete for the mind assure one and all that every event has a precedent in the past. Every event is the result of a chain of cause and effect. They sell this hypnotic suggestion to billions of customers. But for THE SPONTANEOUS and IMPROVISATION, they have no explanation. Except to say these qualities don’t exist. So the blind lead the blind into a dead end.
A person says, “But I’m just ordinary. I don’t deal with these ‘big issues.’ However, “ordinary” is an invention. A role. A character fleshed out by the person himself. And of course the person denies he is doing it.
It takes tremendous attention to detail, in order to achieve the credible role of “ordinary human.” It takes powerful imagining to convince one’s self that this role is natural and WASN’T CONCOCTED.
Billions of individuals hoodwinking themselves in this way is quite a sight.
Earth Culture is all about THAT.
There’s a proviso, however. When a person is acting a role TO THE HILT, that IS reality. It’s entirely real, until he stops. At the end of the play, he walks away.
