Sri Lankan Protesters Crash President’s Swimming Pool
The BBC reports that thousands of protesters broke through several police barricades to storm President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s official residence in the capital of Sri Lanka and some took a dip in the presidential swimming pool.
Demonstrators from all over the country marched to Colombo demanding his resignation after months of protests over mismanagement of the country’s economic crisis. Officials told AFP news agency that some had even “commandeered” trains to get there.
Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister has declared the nation is officially “bankrupt” as it reels from a devastating financial crisis that has seen inflation soar to record highs.
The nation of 22 million has been battling an economic crisis for months, and defaulted on its debts for the first time in May.
