Top 8 Reasons to Cleanse Your Body (and How to Do It…

There are many times when we become more lenient about the foods that we eat… among other healthy habits. The holidays bring endless temptations with unhealthy options at every party, workplace, and gathering. Colder weather has people spending more time indoors and less time outside in fresh air. In addition to our unhealthy choices, we are constantly bombarded with toxins. Toxins cause weight gain, low energy, a weakened immune system, and inflammation throughout the body. One of the best ways to reverse the negative effects of toxins is to cleanse. This article will discuss what cleansing is, the toxins that are adversely affecting our bodies, the top 8 reasons to cleanse the body, and the right way to cleanse. What is a Cleanse? A cleanse is a dietary and lifestyle intervention designed to eliminate toxins from the body. It also supports the body’s natural detoxification system. Cleansing is critical because most people are overloaded with toxins from both internal and external sources. 1 | Internal Toxins Internal toxins, also called endotoxins, are hazardous compounds that are produced by your body. Excess hormones, free radicals, bacteria, and yeast are examples of internal toxins. When these internal toxins accumulate in the body,

10+ Winter Foods to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

It’s officially the first day of Winter! Before you know it, Christmas and New Year’s will be behind us, and we’ll be staring down 3 more cold months. If you are like most Americans, gaining weight and getting sick are two things that you may worry about (at least a little bit) this time of year. If you follow the centuries-old wisdom of Ayurvedic seasonal eating, however, you will feel great and get an immune boost to boot! How Seasonal Eating Can Benefit You This Time of Year Whether people actually gain weight and have more colds and flus in the wintery months is still up for debate. One interesting factoid to consider comes from science, however. It is how our body changes at the physiological level as the weather becomes chillier. A study conducted by the University of Georgia as far back as the early 1990s found that our bodies seem to “gear up” for winter specifically during summer/early autumn when everything is turning from warm to cool. These changes have to do with a variety of factors, including our response to less natural light during the colder months. Despite our electrified world, we seem to know on a

Activated Charcoal: The Fire of Transformation | Part 2

TRANSCRIPT: If you missed the first episode, go here to watch Part 1! David Wolfe: Now let’s keep going; this evolves. Whenever I go somewhere, this is on the beaches of Peru, we always do a fire. And in this particular case, I was planting a garden up. So first thing I’m going to do is the bottom layer on the garden, the bottom layer when I plant a tree, the bottom layer of whatever you’re going to do with the earth is charcoal. You get the charcoal, the bone fire, the bonfire, the bone fire, the bonfire. All up on this beach is all the dead animals there in Peru. And all the walrus’, sea lions, and stuff and we just throw it all in there and then I burn it., bone fire, bonfire. Next thing you know, that’s the basis for the beds that we’re planting up for all you gardeners out there because we do have the technology now to grow the best food ever of all time. Does that sound good? Audience: Yeah. David Wolfe: How about this? Real quick principle, David Avocado Wolfe principle, here it is. Who’s ready? Audience: Ready. David Wolfe: Who’s asleep?

Activated Charcoal: The Fire of Transformation | Part 1

TRANSCRIPT: David Wolfe: Let’s talk about the fire of transformation. When you have a diagnosis, when suddenly it’s a change in life, we can approach it differently. We can go, “thank God this happened to me. Thank God this is me. Thank God I get to change my mind. Thank God I get to change my heart. Thank God I get to change my emotions. Thank God I get to change.” And what is an agent of change? Fire is the agent. It is the symbol of transformation. And what comes out of that fire is charcoal. Now there is a legend that goes all the way back into Scandinavian mythology, the Icelanders turned me on to it. I’m a real fan of Iceland, I have many, many friends in Iceland. I live in Iceland part of the year. And I love that place and I love the cold because most of the world is cold. It’s really interesting, whereas, “Let’s run to comfort, more comfort hide from the cold.” It’s like, no, let’s turn around and let’s toughen ourselves up and get undomesticated. Go Bigfoot Sasquatch level, go out in the forest and go, “Yeah, let’s take it in.”

Chia & Hemp Seed “ Pumpkin Pie” Pudding…

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and we are SO EXCITED at the Bollinger house. This is one of my favorite holidays; we take time to reflect on the blessings that God has given us and spend time with close friends and family. But there’s another thing we love about this day… the food! For many of us, the holiday season is a month-long time of breaking our diets and eating delicious – often unhealthy – foods. But that doesn’t have to be the case! This pumpkin pie pudding is a holiday favorite and is packed with nutrients that can fight disease and keep you feeling healthy and vibrant straight into the new year. This high protein, high fiber, high fat, low carb pudding is vegan and can be enjoyed as part of a ketogenic diet. Did you know that hemp seeds are a superfood? They’re absolutely loaded with essential fatty acids and are high in protein, which helps maintain muscle while boosting metabolism and slowing digestion so you feel full longer. Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are among the richest plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids – including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – which has been shown to protect

Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice: The Health Benefits…

Perhaps nothing is more synonymous with the fall season than pumpkins. Carved pumpkins, pumpkin pies, and pumpkin bread can be found in nearly every home, store, and farm stand. But did you know that pumpkins, their seeds, and their seed oil all provide massive health benefits? This amazing fruit (you read that correctly: pumpkins are a fruit!) is absolutely packed with nutrients and a great source of vitamins A, C, and E. Let’s take a look at the amazing health benefits of pumpkins, pumpkin seeds, and pumpkin seed oil. Pumpkin Benefits Supports the Immune System As indicated by their bright orange color, pumpkins contain beta-carotene, which is converted to vitamin A when consumed. Research has demonstrated that vitamin A plays an important role in promoting immune function. Vitamin C also contributes to immune activity facilitating immune cell activity and increasing white blood cells. Antioxidants help fight off disease-causing free radicals in the body by preventing damage to cells involved in the immune response. Fortunately, pumpkins contain high levels of vitamins A and C, which are both antioxidants. Supports Heart Health Pumpkin contains fiber, potassium, and vitamin C, and is also naturally low in sodium — all of which support healthy

Gluten-Free Pumpkin Pie Recipe

What’s the most sought after dessert for autumn? Pumpkin pie immediately comes to mind, but this healthier version blends pumpkin and butternut squash for its nutrients and flavor. Pumpkin and squash are loaded with carotenoids that are powerful, cancer-fighting nutrients with many other benefits. Nutritionists recommend consuming controlled quantities of complex carbohydrates rich in dietary fiber to lower your risk of prostate cancer. Foods like pumpkin and butternut squash (as well as quinoa, sweet potato, and bananas!) help give your body the minerals it needs to remain healthy and disease-free. Next, a 2012 study published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine demonstrated how the antioxidants found in nutmeg may help to prevent the formation of blood vessel systems that feed cancer tumors. We’ve added cinnamon as well as it acts as a potent blood thinner, making it an excellent natural remedy for maintaining heart health. The cashews add creaminess and are also concentrated with protein, digestive enzymes, magnesium, and antioxidants. They are especially good for fighting colon cancer. This pie is gluten- and dairy-free with healthy omega-3 fatty acids so you can enjoy this dessert on special occasions without the guilt!

Your Fast Food is Loaded With Plasticizers

Fast food is notoriously bad for you. Sure, it’s convenient. And those fake, processed foods are literally designed to be addictive. But the nutritional value of most of these meals is nonexistent, and the trans fats alone are worth avoiding these places altogether.  But in case you needed another reason to give up fast food for good… A new study released on October 27th has discovered that most fast food contains high levels of plasticizers called phthalates. The research, published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology, showed that the drive-thru food you love to hate (and hate to love) is chock-full of hormone-disrupting chemicals and solvents used to increase plasticity.  Researchers at George Washington University ordered dozens of items from McDonald’s, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Taco Bell, and Chipotle. According to their analysis, they found phthalates in over 80% of the samples. And 70% contained the phthalate DEHP. Both of the chemicals have been linked to reproductive health problems. The study authors found several different phthalates, as well as other chemicals meant to replace phthalates, across a variety of fast food takeout items, including fries, burritos, and cheeseburgers. Phthalates are a widely used type of plasticizer, used

Historian Explains How Coke Saved Monsanto — With One…

Originally published on The Defender, Children’s Health Defense’s News + Views website. On a recent episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Bart Elmore, Ph.D., discussed the intertwined history of industry behemoths Coca-Cola and Monsanto, and how consumers can resist supporting the role giant corporations play in poisoning the environment. Elmore, a historian at Ohio State University and author of “Seed Money: Monsanto’s Past and Our Food Future,” said the Monsanto-Coca-Cola relationship can be traced back to the companies’ beginnings. “If not for Coke, there would be no Monsanto,” Elmore told Rogan. “In the early 1900s, Monsanto was nothing. They were on the verge of going out of business. One giant contract saved them, and eventually allowed them to grow into the giant they are today.” What was that contract? “Monsanto supplied Coca-Cola with their artificial sweetener, and their caffeine,” said Elmore. Elmore explained: “To make enough caffeine for Coca-Cola, Monsanto bought the damaged tea leaves from the global tea trade and processed out the caffeine and sold it to the soft drink giant. Then Coca-Cola needed so much caffeine that excess tea leaves wouldn’t cut it  — so Monsanto began developing a synthetic caffeine from coal tar, a byproduct of coal.” Elmore also discussed how

Can Brazil Nuts Protect Against Cancer?

At The Truth About Cancer, we’re absolutely nuts about natural cancer prevention. But what if nuts could be the secret to a cancer-free life? Research shows that that may be just the case! In this article, we’re going to focus on Brazil nuts, which demonstrate incredible anti-cancer benefits. [We should clarify that, technically, the Brazil nut is a seed, not a nut (but it’s way harder to make seed puns). We’re going to refer to them as nuts here, just to keep things simple.] Brazil nuts are tree nuts native to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. Their smooth, buttery texture and nutty flavor are typically enjoyed raw or blanched. These nuts are energy dense, highly nutritious, and one of the most concentrated dietary sources of the mineral selenium. Selenium stimulates a variety of antioxidant pathways in the body and also reduces inflammation, regulates the immune response, and improves blood flow. Selenium can be one of the most potent sources for reducing inflammation. Brazil Nuts are a rich source of selenium, which is an essential nutrient linked to cancer prevention. Eating just one Brazil nut daily can significantly lower your risk of cancer. There has been a bounty

Coconut Oil Benefits: The Incredible Power of Coconut…

In the 1960s, food manufacturers wanted consumers to buy their margarines and hydrogenated oils. To do that, they had to “discredit” the products people had always used in their homes to prepare their food. Olive oil, coconut oil, and lard were no longer “good for you,” they said. The marketing campaign for their synthetic products began and coconut oil was portrayed as an artery-clogging and cholesterol-raising substance. People were told that it contained too much saturated fat and contributed to heart attacks. Flash forward four decades later. In the midst of an obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer explosion, scientists discover that it is not healthy fats found in coconut oil and other natural products that are bad for you. It was, in fact, the very goods the food manufacturers had been pushing on their consumers for thirty years. The trans-fats contained in these “fake foods” were incredibly dangerous to your entire body. High fat, high sugar, and high carb diets were put under the microscope and found guilty. Over-processed, pre-made synthetic foods filled with additives, preservatives, dyes, and high levels of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and other unnatural fillers were found to be the true culprits

Childhood Obesity Has Skyrocketed Amid Coronavirus…

This article first appeared on The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic didn’t just affect the livelihood of millions of Americans and people across the world. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the coronavirus pandemic has also made childhood obesity worse. Pandemic Lockdowns and Childhood Obesity For the CDC study, researchers examined 432,302 adolescents aged two to 19. According to the findings, the young participants doubled their body mass index (BMI) since the start of the pandemic, where most children had to stay at home due to enforced lockdowns and experienced social isolation. The organization also noted that the pandemic caused disruptive changes such as school closures, disrupted routines and increased stress. At the same time, children has less opportunity for regular physical activity and proper nutrition, two factors that contributed significantly to increased weight gain among children and adolescents. According to the report, among the children observed for the study, “the rate of body mass index (BMI) increase approximately doubled during the pandemic compared to a prepandemic period.” (Related: More children have become obese during the COVID-19 lockdowns, says study.) But children were already suffering from obesity even before the pandemic began. Before the pandemic, 19.3 percent of children were considered obese. Now, the figure is

3 Ways to Beat Lyme Disease With Nutrition

The incidence of Lyme disease in the United States has doubled since the ‘90s, with nearly half a million people contracting the disease each year. Sadly, many Lyme patients can suffer long-term, chronic health issues. And while antibiotics and other pharmacological treatments can be effective, they often fall short. The BEST way to keep your body healthy when dealing with Lyme disease is to support your body’s natural defenses with proper nutrition. Treatment with antibiotics alone may not completely eradicate the disease and can even lead to antibiotic-resistant cells that are even harder to combat. Studies have shown that herbal remedies can be MORE effective than drugs at beating the disease. Fortunately, you can give your body a fighting chance against Lyme disease by following 3 nutritional guidelines that will fight the bacteria and assist your recovery. With these nutritional tips, you can live a happier, healthier life.  3 Ways to Fight Lyme With Nutrition 1 | Ditch the Junk Food The foods you choose to eat can either help or hinder your recovery from Lyme disease by impacting your body’s inflammatory burden. The Standard American Diet, rich in refined carbohydrates and industrial seed oils, increases the expression of pro-inflammatory

7+ Reasons to Drink Hibiscus Tea

Editor’s note: A 2013 review of studies conducted in animals found enough concern that hibiscus tea is generally not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Hibiscus flowers have been admired for thousands of years and are practically synonymous with warm, beautiful climates from Africa to Hawaii, where it is the official state flower. Hibiscus is a genus of plants in the Malvaceae family and comprises hundreds of different species. While all of these flowers are beautiful, we’re going to talk about Hibiscus sabdariffa, also known as roselle. Roselle is much more than just a beautiful flower – it’s also a powerful plant for healing and wellness! Hibiscus tea (made by steeping roselle leaves in hot water) has been used for centuries as a tasty and nutritious beverage and natural medicine. Below are some of the top health benefits of hibiscus tea. Be sure to read to the end for some additional ways to incorporate hibiscus into your diet! 7+ Hibiscus Benefits 1 | Lowers Blood Pressure Probably the most well-known benefit of hibiscus tea is its ability to lower blood pressure. A 2010 study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that consuming hibiscus tea lowered blood pressure

Are Herbal Remedies MORE Effective Than Drugs for Lyme…

Lyme disease is one of the fastest-growing diseases in the nation, with an estimated 500,000 new cases each year. Yet Lyme research is severely underfunded, receiving less than 5% of the funding that less common diseases like West Nile virus or malaria receive. And while the mortality rate for Lyme is relatively low, symptoms can range from a simple rash to severe neurological issues and chronic pain. Many patients can develop meningitis (inflammation of the brain), Bell’s palsy (paralysis in one side of the face), permanent muscle weakness. The standard pharmacological treatment for Lyme disease is antibiotics. These can include a 2- or 3-week course of oral antibiotics or (in more severe cases), intravenous antibiotics. Unfortunately, IV antibiotics are usually accompanied by a long list of side effects. And with antibiotic resistance a major threat to global health, finding natural ways to combat disease should always be the preference. In fact, when antibiotics fail to completely eradicate Lyme disease, bacterial cells that have developed antibiotic resistance can continue to proliferate. These are known as persister cells As researchers have continued to search for alternative ways to treat Lyme disease, they’ve discovered that herbal remedies may be MORE effective than antibiotics

USDA — Not Pesticide Companies — Should Regulate…

Center for Food Safety (CFS) and allied plaintiffs filed a new federal lawsuit on Monday challenging the 2020 decision by the Trump administration’s Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) to eliminate most genetically engineered organism (GMO) oversight, including future GMO crops, trees and grasses. Previously nearly all GMO plants had to go through formal USDA approval before open air experiments or prior to commercial use, even if this approval process was very poor and ignored the precautionary principle. The new USDA regulations exempt broad categories of GMO organisms from any pre-market approval and pass any assessment duties to the biotech/pesticide companies to “self-determine” whether their products are exempt or regulated. As explained in the 90-page complaint, the rule change violated numerous core environmental laws, including the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act and the Plant Protection Act. It also unconstitutionally delegated USDA’s statutory responsibilities to self-interested industry. “The Trump administration broke the law in multiple ways when it handed the car keys to pesticide companies on the future products they develop, regardless of the consequences,” said George Kimbrell, legal director for Center for Food Safety and counsel in the case. “The rules unlawfully eviscerate and abandon USDA’s responsibility to protect farmers and the environment.” USDA has

Prebiotics and Probiotics: Why You Need Both for a…

The foods we eat are a lot like seeds, which need to be planted into healthy soils (our digestive systems) in order to grow and bear fruit. We also have gut microflora and various other intestinal elements that act as “water” and “sunlight” to support a bounteous “yield.” In this case the successful digestive conversion of the foods we eat into the substances our bodies need to generate muscle tissue, cellular matrices, energy, and the various other building blocks of life. But what about the fertilizer? It’s something that’s rarely talked about when dealing with the issue of digestive health. Most of the focus centers around probiotics − the “soil” in our digestive tracts that works in tandem with enzymes, bile, hydrochloric acid, and other digestive “juices” to process the foods we eat. As it turns out, probiotics require their own food or “fertilizer” in order to function properly, and many people aren’t getting enough of it to support a healthy microbiome. In other words, their “soils” are deficient or altogether dead, resulting in inadequate uptake and assimilation of nutrients. Without Prebiotics, Probiotics Can’t Do Their Job You’re probably already familiar with probiotics because they’ve gotten a lot

Child Diabetes More Than Doubles After Lockdowns

As the casualty count from lockdowns and other over-the-top COVID-19 response measures continues to climb, it seems that children are yet again bearing the brunt of government incompetence. According to new research, the incidence of type 2 diabetes in children has more than doubled since the pandemic began. Findings from the two separate retrospective chart reviews — one conducted in Washington, DC, and the other in Baton Rouge, Louisiana — were presented June 25 at the virtual American Diabetes Association (ADA) 81st Scientific Sessions. Although the two studies differed somewhat in the clinical parameters examined, both revealed a similar doubling of the rates of hospitalizations for type 2 diabetes among youth during 2020 compared with the same time period in 2019, as well as greater severity of metabolic disturbance. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease, caused by poor diet and exercise, implicating the lifestyle of the “new normal” in the skyrocketing rates of diagnosis and hospitalization in our children. During the pandemic, the number of cases of type 2 diabetes increased by 182%, from 50 in 2019 to 141 in 2020. The average age at diagnosis was about 14 years in both time periods. In

Cruciferous Vegetables Prove Mainstream Medicine Wrong

Mainstream medicine’s message for decades has been that you cannot change the destiny of your genes. The profession as a whole has neglected to recognize the role of dietary changes in disease prevention, including cancer. Still, to this day, most conventional doctors will only say to patients, “you have to watch what you eat,” (if anything at all), which basically says nothing to the patient. If you are a regular subscriber of our weekly digest, or have watched our Eastern Medicine: Journey Through ASIA documentary, then you know that the food you eat matters! Every time you eat broccoli, broccoli sprouts, cauliflower, or Brussels sprouts, your body converts a key nutrient found in these tasty foods into another one that science has been aggressively researching for its anti-cancer potential. This converted nutrient, known as 3,3′-Diindolylmethane, or DIM, has shown incredible promise in the fight against cancer, demonstrating powerful chemo-protective action that may help in the prevention, suppression, and even reversal of cancer. The precursor to indole-3-carbinol (I3C), which itself is generated following the enzymatic hydrolysis, or breakdown, of glucobrassicin, an indole glucosinolate present in cruciferous vegetables, DIM has been shown in both animal and human studies to inhibit the development of cancer. One

Detoxifying Cauliflower, Kale, and Pine Nut Confetti…

Humble cauliflower is often overlooked as a leading member of the cruciferous family, but it’s actually one of the healthiest foods on the planet. It boasts a rich supply of health-promoting phytochemicals, anti-inflammatory compounds, and other cancer-busting nutrients. Importantly, cauliflower supports digestion and detoxification. This is due to its sulfur-containing compounds, known as glucosinolates. These compounds break down in your stomach into byproducts during digestion, supporting efficient nutrient absorption as well as toxin and waste removal. This delicious side or main dish also features kale, another superstar cruciferous veggie that provides glucosinolate compounds in addition to vitamins A, C, K, anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, and calcium. Like cauliflower, kale is filled with fiber and sulfur, both great for detoxifying your body and keeping your liver healthy. The DIM (diindolylmethane) and indole-3-carbinole in cruciferous vegetables such as kale and cauliflower help metabolize and breakdown estrogen in the body. This helps women maintain a healthy balance of hormones, which is critical for overall health, and specifically to lower risk of hormone-driven cancers. Kale is also a good source of quercetin, which has strong anti-inflammatory compounds and prevents tumor cell growth. Quercetin also aids in the removal of excess estrogen from the body by stimulating liver function to detoxify estrogen and other carcinogenic agents. Last, but
