SCOTUS: California Must Allow In-Home Religious Gatherings

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision late Friday that California must lift its coronavirus pandemic restrictions on in-home religious gatherings and prayer meetings. The petitioners are a pastor and group of worshipers who hold services in their home because of coronavirus restrictions. They asked for an injunction reversing the lower federal courts and blocking California Gov. Gavin Newsom while this case is on appeal. Earlier in 2020, faith leaders protested Newsom’s lockdowns on indoor worship. Later in the year, Newsom ignored a Supreme Court order and doubled down on his lockdowns regarding indoor religious gatherings. The lower courts, including the Ninth Circuit, ruled against these home-church worshipers. According to the court majority, this is “the fifth time the Court has summarily rejected the Ninth Circuit’s analysis of California’s coronavirus restrictions on religious exercise.” In an order from the court, the five conservative justices on the court voted to grant the injunction. Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the three liberals on the court to deny the injunction sought by the church. In this opinion, no single justice is credited as the author, so it is a per curiam opinion. The court majority explained its ruling under

A man rushed over to save a 75-year-old woman who was allegedly attacked during an apparent carjacking recently at a Safeway in San Francisco. “I could barely sleep that night!” said the man who asked not to be identified. Video footage a witness took showed the man walking out of the store at about 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, ABC 7 reported. “I’m walking across the parking lot and I see this old woman getting dragged across by her head, and these girls are punching her. They’re kicking her; they’re stomping on her,” he recalled. Police said the elderly woman was walking back to her car when three women allegedly attacked her, took her keys, purse, and tried to carjack the vehicle. That was when the young man took action and ran over to help. “Honestly, I’m still trying to figure out why I did this… but I just punched through the back window and it was loud enough and kind of scary enough to freak them out,” he explained. The video footage showed the suspects get out of the car and run away from the scene. The man then went over to comfort the elderly woman. A witness described the

TV Journalist Reporting on Car Thefts Robbed of Camera in San Francisco

A TV journalist was robbed of his camera at gunpoint while reporting on car thefts in the San Francisco area, authorities said. KPIX reporter Don Ford said he was getting ready to interview residents Wednesday for reactions to multiple car thefts around Twin Peaks when four men showed up in a white sedan. “The car came up here while we were about to do an interview; three guys jumped out,” Ford told KPIX. “One had a gun and put in my face and said, ‘We’re taking the camera.’” The robbery took place around 12:35 p.m. at Burnett Avenue and Twin Peaks Boulevard, SF Gate reported. Ford said he focused on being calm under pressure despite being held at gunpoint. “My whole thought at the moment was ‘Be calm. Let’s not get this guy excited. He’s got the gun. I don’t. So you take you the camera. It’s yours, buddy,’” he said. The alleged robbers fled with the camera, but it had a tracking chip and was found later on Wednesday, police said. City Supervisor Rafael Mandelman said the incident was “ridiculous and unacceptable.” Earlier this afternoon a reporter was robbed at gunpoint at Twin Peaks Blvd & Burnett Ave while interviewing
